Book of Shadows
What is a Book of Shadows?
It is a journal that a witch keeps to record rituals, spells and other important information such as the outcome of spells to determine if changes need to be made for a more successful outcome and to remember a celebration, rite, or ritual of any kind.
How to make a Book of Shadows
A blank book of any kind can be used as a Book of Shadows. I find that binders work well because you can add, arrange and remove pages as you wish. You can organize your BoS any way you wish. Mine begins with the stuff I want to memorize like the Wiccan Rede and other poems I will use in rituals and spells. You can include whatever you find significant to your spellcrafting and rituals.
I record spell information. Date, time, day of week, herbs used, incense used, tools used, etc. I write down exactly what I did and said such as chant, burn a list, etc. Then, I wait for the outcome. Sometimes I will get results in just a couple of days or sometimes it takes a full cycle. I wait at least a complete moon cycle before deciding that it failed. Everything comes to fruition in its own time. That time frame depends on what it is. Plants and crops grow in weeks while a human pregnancy takes approximately 9 months or so. Everything has its own timing.
I record the details of rituals that I create for such things as handfasting, parting ways, commitment ceremonies, and yes even the religious things such as Sabbats and Esbats. In each of my workings, regardless if spell or ritual, I write how many attended, even if it was just me. I always include which Deity/ies I have invoked and even planetary alignments and astrological signs the moon is in. I keep this information for future reference so I am not relying on my memory alone to recall the details of a rite or spell.
Everything has meaning in magick and it does make a difference what each thing means to you, even if you know it is all for psychological connection. It is important how you were feeling at the time of a spell and how certain rituals made you feel and why you think you felt that way because emotions are a key factor in spellcraft.
My first Book of Shadows was a small blank journal. The cover was black with a gold Pentacle engraved on the front cover. If you do a lot of workings it will fill fast and you may want to section it out if you can’t remove and replace pages. I now have a large book with lined pages and a black cover. When that is full, I will use a binder. I plan to decorate the binder in the old style, cloth wedding photo albums from the 80s. Hey, what can I say, I like that style. I will bead a pentacle on the black cloth cover and use lace around the edges. You can do whatever you want with your BoS. Just make sure it has a significant and serious intention.
I also keep a special pen to write in my BoS. One I keep with it at all times. Although, this does not really matter, it is only significant to me. As I get older and it becomes more difficult to write, I will type up everything and keep it neatly in my binder. It is yours, and it is private and it should have meaning to you as should all that you use for magick.
